#NoFilter: Introducing the GHD Mental Health Series

Our team is built on volunteers. Like many in the world of Global Health, we are all driven by ideals, morals and generosity. The reason we do what we do is because we want to enhance human flourishing and improve health in communities around the world. Because of this, we tend to give a lot of ourselves without demanding much in return.

On top of this, a career in Global Health is demanding. The stereotypical model of an international health and development worker is one who gets off on stress, high intensity situations, travel, and sacrifice. Competition for jobs is fierce. And it’s difficult to figure out exactly what path you should follow to get where you want to go. There’s a lot of off-piste bush-bashing to find a career path.

Despite the joy we all feel in a career in global health, we need to be honest about our own well-being, about taking care of ourselves as a priority, and about owning up when you’re not OK.

That’s why GHD has decided to launch a mental health series that highlights the experiences of young professionals in the field. We’ve committed to unrelenting honesty to open a space for people to share, connect and heal through their stories and that of others.

Would you like to contribute to the conversation? Do you feel passionate about creating a culture shift for mental health and well-being in global health? We would love to hear from you. Please follow this link email us with your ideas at globalhealthdisrupted@gmail.com!
